Young Wingmakers - The Academy Weekend Review

Airbus Academy Administrator6 Dec 2023 - 22:21

Matches Were Played 2nd & 3rd December 2023

U10

This week saw the u10s start the week by hosting Salford City FC on a cold winters evening. The game was very even throughout with end to end action resulting in nunerous shots and goals. Airbus showed some great play in parts. On Saturday we travelled to Wigan and right from the first whistle we were in for a battle. Airbus showed positive signs of playing out from that back playing the ball forwards into the empty space. We also demonstrated great defensive skills locking the opposition out wide when attacking on goal.

Player of the week:

Freddie Argyle - This week showing a great display of defensive skills and actively looked to get on the ball and play forward passes.

U12

The U12’s travelled away to play Connahs Quay Nomads hoping for a better result than the previous meeting. The u12’s found themselves 2-0 down midway through the first half before Frank jones pulled a goal back with a left foot strike 2-1 at half time...game on!! Unfortunately in our opinion a blatant penalty wasn’t awarded by the referee when Jacob Mountain was clean through and just about to pull the trigger. At this stage of the game the U12 were dominating possession. Unfortunately it didn't go out way and five minutes later nomads went down the other end and scored. The lads heads dropped at this point before an excellent run and shot into the top corner from Jacob mountain. Final score 6-2 to nomads - an improvement on the previous meeting, but would have been a different game if the penalty had been awarded.

Player of the week:

Jacob Mountain - tireless work-rate in midfield throughout.

U13

On Sunday, the U13s played host to table-topping CQ Nomads. Over the last couple of weeks the U13's have been working hard on coming up with solutions to beating a high press when our own goalkeeper has the ball. Considering they were playing against the best attack in the league, they had some excellent success, particularly in the first half. Our movement in the midfield was good and our defence played the ball quickly on less touches. Something that they had struggled with in previous weeks. Despite the scoreline going against us, there were a lot of positives to take from the game. Some of the quality in midfield was sublime at times and we did create some good chances. We do need to improve defensively as opposing teams are finding it far too easy to score at the moment, especially when they break against us. However, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and we will continue to work hard to get better.

Player of the week:

Alfie Edwards - Continued to work tirelessly in the game against Nomads and followed it up with an all round brilliant performance in training on Monday night. Alfie is showing a great attitude and this is helping him make excellent progress.

U14

We knew that we would be in for a physical battle away at Nomads and our hosts came out of the traps quickly. However a good early save from Bailey Davies kept them at bay. We settled and began to press higher and got our rewards when the opposition keeper brought down Nataniel Rakowiecki in the box. Alex Mossman calmly struck the penalty home. We didn't enable Nomads to play out and from the 2nd phase of the press...the in form Dylan  Cusato carried the ball forward, shrugged off 2 players and struck the ball over the keeper into the net. 2-0 @ half time. We scored a third directly from a corner through Caiden Baker-Williams which ended the game as a contest. Evan Roberts, Alfie Neal and Aaron Charles dealt with any Nomads pressure and we could have scored a couple more with Joseph Pridding & Billy Allen going close. Nomads were awarded penalty, but Bailey Davies made a fine save to his right to keep the clean sheet. Great character & discipline shown throughout by the lads. Out of possession we were excellent and although we were happy with the 3-0 result, we still have plenty to work on in possession going forward.

Player of the week:

Evan Roberts - Excellent performance from Evan. Was strong & missed nothing in defensive areas all game. In possession he broke lines with his passing & carried the ball well into midfield areas to create overloads. He is getting better week by week and is consistently setting high standards. Well done Ev.

Bailey Davies - Making big saves at crucial times. His penalty save was excellent and he is full of confidence at the moment. He is consistently training and playing extremely well & it is great to see - well done Bailey.

U16

Sunday morning brought us derby day after what was a such a tight contest last time. Both teams went at it from minute one. Airbus started on the front foot creating two good chances from the off. Airbus then took the lead after breaking from deep quickly and getting Harry Jones through on goal who brilliantly lifted the ball over the goalkeeper on an angle. With not much in it, we thought we were going into half time with a lead but a five minute turn around happened - after Nomads scored two goals from outside the penalty area to turn the game on its head. Airbus re-grouped at half time after the sucker punch and pleasingly started the half well. Airbus then equalised after Harry Jones slotted home from Tom Edwards tireless work to drive and recover the ball down nomads right hand side. The next fifteen minutes or so was an unbelievable showcase for u16s academy football. Both teams attacked & attacked trying to get the winner competing fearlessly. Both teams come agonisingly close to a winner but a draw seemed a fair reflection on the game.

Player of the match:

Harry Jones - A real mature strikers performance. Link up play, runs in behind, physical battle with centre half’s. Had it all. Two top finishes for his goals too.
