Airbus reach NEWFA Cup Final after victory over a valiant Penyfford Lions

After our victory in the National Welsh Blood Cup Final, our attentions turned to Tuesday evening and a chance to book a spot in the NEWFA Cup Final for the second season running.

With that in mind there was few changes to the starting line up with Sam Fenney, Ieuan Jones-Wellstead, Joe Palmer, Dan Collins, James Allen, James Davies, Jake Roberts and Franek Sadczuk all given starts. There was also a place on the bench for youngster Finlay Hayes.

Airbus got us underway for the evening with the sun shinning on the Airfield as the WingMakers kicked from left to right.

It was Airbus with the first chance of the game as Josh Stevenson met a corner and his header was saved well by Leigh Williams.

17’ some good work by Ieuan Jones-Wellstead and Franek Sadczuk, led to a good cross from Jones-Wellstead but the chance went wide.

Two minutes later, Airbus were knocking at the Penyfford goal again, Nath Williams had an effort from the edge of the box which brought a fantastic save from Leigh Williams who managed to get a hand to the shot and push wide. Sadczuk picked the loose ball as his header was on target and Williams again was there with another reaction save.

Jones-Wellstead was getting a lot of joy down the right and this time his cross was hung up to the back post for Jake Roberts, but his effort was just past the far post.

Another delivery into the box from Jones-Wellstead two minutes later was sent to the back post once again and this time it was James Davies who made a connection with the cross, but his header was a bit tame as the Penyfford goalkeeper collected.

23’ Sam Rickett picked the ball up in defence to drive forward with the ball, his pass inside to Jake Roberts was brilliant, and the forwards shot was just past the post from the edge of the box.

Airbus had their breakthrough on the half hour; Jake Roberts laid a prefect set off to Joe Palmer who slotted the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

It was two goals in a minute for the hosts; this time it was Jake Roberts with a free kick which come crashing off the post for Dan Collins to pick the rebound up and finish to make it 2-0 to Airbus.

Roberts was very busy and was involved once again, this time he was found by Nath Williams, but the striker’s effort was blasted over the bar.

Five minutes before half time, the visitors pulled a goal back. The ball was worked into space down Airbus’ left and Ethan Moss chipped a ball into the box, and it was Alister Randles who managed to get a foot on the ball at the near post and give Penyfford a goal and reduce the deficit going into the half time break.

The visitors got us back underway for the second half as the sun began to set in the background.

Airbus started the second half as they started the first, and it was Sadczuk with an effort but this time it was over the bar.

Sadczuk had another chance on 50’ to get his name on the scoresheet. Some great link-up play between Collins and Sadczuk, released Sadczuk for shot which was saved by Williams.

56’ Joe Palmer chipped a delightful ball in the box which found James Davies and his headed effort was straight into the Penyfford goalkeepers’ hands.

Just after the hour mark, Airbus had their 2-goal cushion. A cross by Jones-Wellstead was met by Davies and his header was saved by Williams, but the rebound landed to Roberts who made no mistake with his finish.

With just under 20 minutes of the 90 remaining, Airbus made a double substitution with Danny Warren and Kaiden Cooke replacing Jake Roberts and Franek Sadczuk.

Cooke was straight into the action as his shot brought a good save from Leigh Williams.

With 10 minutes remaining, Airbus made a triple substitution as Harry Davies, Mason Blackwell-Jones and Finlay Hayes replaced Sam Fenney, Nath Williams and Joe Palmer.

Danny Warren is 1 short of 50 goals for Airbus, a cross by James Allen found Warren and his effort come off the bar. 3 minutes later he had another chance to get that goal.

A penalty was awarded for a foul on Kaiden Cooke. Warren stepped up to take the spot kick, and his penalty was saved well down low to his right by Williams as he pushed the ball wide into James Davies’ path, whose shot was again saved by Williams to deny Airbus a 4th.

The referee blew time on the game, and Airbus progressed to the NEWFA Cup Final where they will play Holywell Town in a carbon copy of last year’s final.

Congratulations also to Penyfford on their journey in the competition and we wish them all the best for next season.
