Match Report: Barry Town United FC 4-2 Airbus UK Broughton FC

Michelle Griffiths

Airbus UK Broughton suffered defeat on the road against Barry Town despite twice pulling themselves back into the contest in an entertaining six-goal encounter.

The opening stages were fairly even, with both sides enjoying spells of possession without creating any clear-cut opportunities.

On 13 minutes, Oli Calland halted a home attack and was booked for his challenge. From the resulting free kick, Barry Town caused a scramble inside the Airbus box, with Louie Fallon also being fouled as the hosts looked to threaten.

Barry continued to apply pressure and on 27 minutes, a ball played in behind the full-back found Jordan Evans, whose cross into the box was punched clear by George Ratcliffe.

Two minutes later, the hosts broke the deadlock. Sion Spence found Owen Brain, who took aim from distance and produced an excellent finish into the bottom corner to give Barry Town the lead.

Airbus looked to respond, and on 34 minutes a mis-hit effort from Joe Palmer appeared to be heading off target before Jake Roberts got a toe to the ball, although he couldn't direct his effort towards goal.

Barry Town remained dangerous, with a ball down the right beating Nath Williams on 37 minutes before Josh Stevenson was forced to clear over the bar for a corner.

Just before the break, Spence tried his luck from outside the box, but Fallon produced a superb save to push the effort wide.

The hosts started the second half brightly, with James Lester heading just wide from an early corner on 46 minutes.

Airbus then began to threaten more regularly. On 53 minutes, a clever ball found George Peers, whose backheel attempt to pick out Kaiden Cooke was intercepted.

A minute later, Cooke drove towards the Barry Town box before finding Jordan Evans in space. His shot was blocked, with the ricochet falling to Peers, but his first touch unfortunately took the ball away from him.

Barry Town doubled their advantage on 56 minutes. Owen Brain was the provider this time, producing a brilliant ball in behind Calland for Owen Cuddihy, who finished across Fallon to make it 2–0.

Airbus continued to push forward, with Peers finding himself in a promising position on 57 minutes, only for an extra touch to allow the home defence to close down the space.

Barry nearly added another on 60 minutes when Airbus lost possession and Jadyn Crosbie reacted quickest, but Fallon was equal to his effort and produced another fine save.

Two minutes later, Airbus came close from a short corner, with Cooke forcing a brilliant save from Ratcliffe on his line.

The WingMakers finally got themselves back into the game on 64 minutes. Cooke produced a superb run and cross into the box, finding Peers, whose header across goal found the back of the net to make it 2–1.

However, Barry restored their two-goal advantage just four minutes later. The hosts were awarded a free kick on the left and Brain stepped up, sending his set piece over Fallon and into the top corner.

A double substitution was introduced by Airbus after Barry scored their third, with Oli Lanceley and Tyler McManus replacing Sean Moscrop and Jake Roberts

Airbus refused to give up and once again reduced the deficit on 72 minutes. Oli Lanceley found Jordan Evans, who produced a wonderful strike from distance that flew into the top corner to make it 3–2.

The comeback hopes were ultimately ended three minutes later. Having only just come on as a substitute, Jack Shaw needed just two minutes to make an impact, getting in front of his defender to poke Spence's cross past Fallon and put Barry 4–2 ahead.

Airbus continued to search for another route back into the game, but Lanceley's effort on 82 minutes sailed well over the bar.

Following another Airbus substitution on 84 minutes, where Calland was replaced by James Hughes, the visitors continued to press late on. Cooke found space on the left in the 90th minute but fired wide, while Peers tested Ratcliffe from just outside the box two minutes later, with the goalkeeper collecting comfortably.

In the final action of the game, Airbus sent another ball into the box and Peers attempted an overhead kick, but the effort went straight at Ratcliffe.

Despite pulling themselves back into the game on two occasions, the WingMakers ultimately came away from Barry Town empty-handed as the hosts secured a 4–2 victory.
