Chairman Micky Mayfield

We spoke to Micky about his time playing and his time as Chairman

Hello Micky, thank you for your time, you played for Airbus back in the late 60's/early 70s, what was your memories of playing for the club?

M.M. “I joined the factory in 1967 as an apprentice, the training school and factory were very sport minded, which was great for me, I used to play football

Whenever and wherever I could. Just couldn’t get enough!! We used to travel all over the country playing other factories in annual cup competition’s, in all sorts of mixed sports, I also dabbled a bit in table tennis, and a bit of distance running. It was great. One outstanding memory for me was my very first trip with the apprentices in their annual cup competition, we were at Lostock,

When we got off our coach and headed into the canteen for breakfast and introductions, we were met by a barrage of noise from all the other teams, hundreds of lads smashing their knives and forks on the tables chanting “ we hate Chester “ The factory was known then as Chester then. It was quite intimidating; turns out we used to win it most years.
We used to play football in the English system at time. But we eventually settled into the Welsh league Wrexham area, and we grew from there

You scored your last goal for the club when you were 48, that must make you the oldest scorer for Airbus?

M.M. “Yes, I can remember, I had not long had my 48th birthday, it was an away game, and I was secretary for the club at the time. I used to still go training with the lads, just to keep fit but always available to go along as sub if needed.

This particular day, we were a couple of goals up and our manager said, “fancy a run out Mayhem?” So, with half an hour to go I am on!!! My first touch I put young Alan Plevin in, and he scored, a couple of minutes later I played a one two with Alan again, he went to the goal line and smashed a low cross into the area and I did a Denis Law v Man United goal and scored.

Everyone came rushing to congratulate me, then I heard “Mayhem" turned around and the manager is dragging me off, “not having that he said embarrassing the young lads” I’d been on about ten minutes.!!!!!

I believe you have been Chairman for Airbus in two different periods, what has been your favourite time at Airbus?

M.M. “Difficult one this, as I have been so lucky to have been on this journey with our club!! It’s not all about success on the pitch, it’s playing with mates, it’s creating friendships that last a lifetime, it’s about creating memories, I have absolutely loved it.

There are so many people who along the way have put their heart and soul into the club. Every one of them has helped us get to where we are now, some still are"

Are you looking forward to the upcoming season and seeing how the team fair in the Cymru Premier?

M.M. “Yes, of course we are!
It is proving though to be a challenge already, So, it will be a hard slog that all at the club are prepared for. Come on the Bus”
