On a very sunny and hot afternoon, Airbus travelled to Latham Park, Newtown to take on Treowen Stars looking to retain their trophy after beating Trefelin last season.
Airbus made one change to the starting line-up that started in their 3-1 win against Llandudno last week, with Danny Warren replacing Jake Roberts. There was also a place back in the squad for Joe Palmer after a picking up an injury against Holywell at the beginning of the month.
Airbus got us underway for the afternoon, with the heat radiating through the 4g, as they were kicking left to right.
From the first whistle it was Airbus with the ball and control of the game as Treowen looked to keep their shape and frustrate the WingMakers.
7’ minutes in a ball into the box by Josh Stevenson was cleared and it fell to Jordan Evans on the edge of the box, and his strike was tipped over the bar by Cameron Clarke.
A ball into the box by Mason Blackwell-Jones on 11’ was cleared by the Treowen defence for a corner and from the resulting corner Danny Warren rose higher than anyone else to get a flick on the ball, which looked to be heading into the far corner as it shaved the crossbar and out for a goal kick.
Treowen snatched at a shot through Macsen Evans on 24’ as he was unable to get power and direction on his effort and Keighan Jones easily collected the ball.
The JD Cymru South side were set up to try and hit Airbus on the break and this come into action on 36’. An inside pass from Kaiden Cooke was intercepted by Treowen, which allowed them to bellow in on the Airbus box, and they won a corner from a block. From the resulting corner it was an easy ball to collect for Jones as he released the pressure for Airbus.
4 minutes of the 45 remained and Airbus were awarded a penalty. George Peers did well to hold the ball up and when he tried to turn his defender he pulled him down to the floor and the referee pointed to the spot.
The Airbus No.11 stepped up to take the spot kick and his confident strike sent Clarke the wrong way and give Airbus the lead going into the half time break.
Treowen got us back underway for the second half in the lovely sunshine and the second half started the way the first half finished with Airbus in control of the game.
49’ Danny Warren collected a loose ball and travelled with the ball towards goal and the striker decided to take the shot on and it was dragged just wide.
Just before the hour, Sam Rickett found Peers down the right with a brilliant, placed pass in between the defenders. Peers sent an inviting ball into the box but no one in a blue shirt was there to put the ball into the back of the net.
64’ Airbus decided to work a short corner from the right as Jordan Evans played the ball into Peers and it was worked well to Warren on the edge of the area to take a shot and it was saved at the near post.
Four minutes later, Peers looked to being getting his second of the game as he found himself in behind the Treowen defence, but a great block from Callum Hodges denied the Airbus No.11.
With 20 minutes remaining of the 90, Airbus made a double substitution with Jake Roberts and James Davies replaced Danny Warren and Mason Blackwell-Jones, who had both put a shift in, in the sweltering heat.
James Davies made an impact within 5 minutes of entering the game. Jordan Evans and Nath Williams linked up well to move the ball into space for Williams to run on to down the left. Williams’ cross found Davies in space at the back post as his first time shot with his left foot come ricocheting off the cross bar and in to give Airbus a 2-0 lead.
With a 2-goal cushion, Airbus made another double substitution with Joe Palmer and Dan Collins replacing Kaiden Cooke and Sam Rickett.
84’ Davies was looking to become provider as his brilliant cross to the near post was aimed for Peers, but Treowen did well to get there and head the ball out for a corner.
An inside pass from Tyler McManus was perfect into the path of Dan Collins and his effort brought a good save from Clarke.
There was 5 minutes of time added on and Collins was involved again. He tried his luck from just outside the box and his effort was just over the bar.
The referee blew time on the game and queue Airbus celebrations as they retained their title and made it back to back wins in the Welsh Blood Service League Cup Final.
