Michelle Griffiths19 Apr - 07:49

Airbus crowned Northern Cup Winners with great second half comeback.

Friday evening, we travelled to a rainy Go Goodwins Stadium, Llandudno to take on Bangor 1876 in the Northern Final.

Airbus made one change to the side that started last weeks League game against Caersws with Jordan Evans replacing Joe Palmer.

Airbus got us underway for the first half under a grey and murky sky, kicking from left to right.

The WingMakers started the game quite slow, and it was Bangor that had the first real chance of the game. 2 minutes in and Dylan Summers-Jones flashed a ball across goal, but it was too hard for James Barry sliding in at the back post.

Barry was involved 3 minutes later when he delivered another dangerous ball into the box but this time it was out for safety and Airbus were awarded a throw-in.

Airbus had there first real chance of the game on 7 minutes when a dangerous Kaiden Cooke made a run inside and found Davies on the half turn which took him away from the Bangor defender, but his finish was just wide of the post.

The WingMakers were a bit flat in the opening exchanges and their efforts on goal were coming from long range, as Jordan Evans hit a shot straight at Carl Jones.

The Bangor keeper was making another comfortable save a minute later as he collected into his hands from Josh Stevenson.

Airbus were creating chances but were finding it difficult to find that end product.

Nath Williams sent a cross-field ball to George Peers, who pulled the ball back perfectly for Davies, but his effort was just wide once again.

28 minutes into the first half, Bangor took the lead. Joe Sullivan delivered a dangerous ball into the Airbus box and Liam Morris met the cross with a great header past Keighan Jones.

Between the Bangor goal and half time there was a few half chances for both sides, but Bangor went into the half time break a goal to the good.

Airbus come out in the second half looking for an instant reaction to get themselves back in the tie.

And 2 minutes into the second half, they got that. Danny Warren switched the ball superbly to find Jordan Evans, who played the ball into space for Davies. Davies ran at the Bangor defence and pulled the ball back, where it was diverted goalwards, and it was 1-1

Bangor threatened on 51, Jack Ellison found himself a yard of space where he was through on goal but some great defending from Williams and McManus did enough to put the No.5 off.

The game was starting to open up for Airbus as the forward players were finding the space really well. Danny Warren was allowed to get a shot off at goal, but it was over the bar and not troubling Carl Jones.

George Peers was probably involved in everything going forward and he slipped a ball down the right for Cooke in behind on 61. The young pacey Winger cut inside, and his shot clipped the crossbar to Jones relief.

Warren found himself in space on 65, when he was presented with the goalkeeper off his line for Bangor. The No.8 went for the chip but didn’t quite get enough on the effort as a big hand from Jones managed to push the ball to safety.

Airbus were creating more of the chances and having much more off the ball. This time it was the turn of Jordan Evans to show his skills off as he dropped his shoulder to lose Dan Cox and deliver a cross, but it was intercepted by Bangor for a corner.

With 20 minutes remaining, a change of personnel by Airbus with Sam Baker replacing James Davies.

73 minutes Summers-Jones brought a brilliant save out of Keighan Jones as the ball went for a corner.

From the resulting corner, Airbus were able to win the ball and form their own attack. Cooked carried the ball around 30 yards and took a shot across Carl Jones but the Bangor keeper did well to get down low to his left to deny Cooke.

With 13 minutes remaining of the 90, Airbus took the lead. Jordan Evans with a right footed shot from around 25 yards hit the inside of the post and in. Cue carnage in the Airbus dugout as the ball hit the back of the net.

Keighan had to keep his concentration as Bangor had a chance shortly after, but he was alert to danger and saved well down to his right.

Ryan Stratulis come close for Bangor shortly after when he tried his chances with a long-range effort , which Jones watched over. The effort was closer than we thought, but Jones looked confident.

Warren held the ball up well on 82 and fed a perfectly timed ball into Baker, who cut inside and looked destined to score but Carl Jones was equal to the shot.

83 minutes Toby Vickery was introduced for Kaiden Cooke to manage the game and see Airbus over the final hurdle.

Sam Baker had another chance on 89 minutes as Jordan Evans found the young striker and he managed to round the Bangor keeper, and the ball looked like it was heading goalwards and the ball trickled wide. There was a strong shout for a penalty as Jones caught Baker before taking his shot.

To add to the nerves for Airbus, there was 5 minutes of injury time added to the second half.

Two minutes into the injury time, Bangor had a corner but as Jones come to clear he was impeded, and the ref blew for a free kick for the Airbus No.1.

Airbus did well to see the game out and as the final whistle blew there was jubilation for the WingMakers as they were crown Northern Cup Winners and will now take on Trefelin in the National Cup Final in a week’s time.

Also on another plus point for the club, 11 players and 3 coaches were involved in the game, which shows the great pathway for the youngsters to be part of the First Team set up.
