A great second half performance gives the WingMakers three points

After a disappointing result at Denbigh Town last time out in the league, Airbus were looking to get back to winning ways in the league, as they welcomed Guilsfield to the Hollingsworth Group Stadium. Midweek Airbus did have a win against Gresford in the NEWFA Cup as they progressed to next round with a goal from Jordan Evans.

Tuesday evening was a windy affair, and the weather was tough for both teams on Saturday afternoon as the wind swirled over the Airbus pitch.

A few changes were made to the Airbus starting line-up as Danny Warren, George Peers, Joe Palmer and Jordan Evans replaced Nath Williams, Ieuan Jones-Wellstead, Dan Collins and Jake Roberts.

Airbus got us under way for the for the first half kicking with the way the wind was blowing. Both teams in the first five minutes were getting used to the weather conditions and it was apparent that it was going to be a struggle playing the ball above head height.

7 minutes in, Airbus were awarded a free kick, which Jordan Evans delivered into the Guilsfield box, the visitors did well to clear the ball. The ball fell to Josh Stevenson and did some great skill to make himself some space to get a shot off and his effort come crashing off the post.

Airbus were trying to get the ball the down and play, as some great play between Stevenson and Evans set Mason Blackwell-Jones for a cross, but his cross was just a little heavy.

Guilsfield’s James Smallwood delivered a ball into the box on 15’, which Sam Flory managed to flick on as he saw his effort go wide of the far post.

18’ Keighan Jones was called into action, as Guilsfield worked the ball well to the edge of the box for Adam Hails and his powerful shot brought a fantastic save from Jones.

Two minutes later, Airbus turned defence into attack. Joe Palmer got the ball down and played a great ball into Jordan Evans, who set James Davies on his way. Davies cut inside and played a lovely through ball to George Peers and his shot was saved by Luke Evans to deny the Airbus N0.11.

Jordan Evans was starting to get more space, and he played an unbelievable lofted pass to find Peers, who looked set to score, but Danny Warren lifted the ball into net, and as he reeled away to celebrate the official’s flag was raised.

Guilsfield had an effort just before the half hour as Adam Hails had an effort which he saw go wide.

James Davies was having some great joy down the right and this time as he cut inside, his shot was unfortunately at Luke Evans’ hands.

Blackwell-Jones found Warren a few minutes later in space on the edge of the area and the Airbus striker opened his body to set himself to curl an effort into the top corner, but it just had a bit too much height on as it was over the crossbar.

Jordan Evans had the last chance of the first half, as a free kick was awarded in a dangerous position. His effort had plenty of power that would have troubled Luke Evans but there was too much height on the ball as it raised over the bar.

The referee blew time on a difficult half for both teams, but Airbus probably pipped it on chances overall.

Guilsfield got us back underway for the second half, as Airbus were now attacking into the wind.

Guilsfield found themselves in behind the Airbus defence, shortly after kick-off as Hailes found space to receive the ball and he was unable to adjust his body to get his shot on target.

49’ Airbus had a 1-0 lead. Tyler McManus found Joe Palmer with a little pass inside as he took a touch and set himself for a curling shot into the top corner.

Within 2 minutes, Airbus doubled their lead. George Peers chased down a ball and the Guilsfield ‘keeper Evans was unable to get to the ball as Peers lobbed Evans and Danny Warren tapped the ball in at the back post.

Airbus were playing well against the wind and the two early goals set them up for the second half. A cross by Blackwell-Jones was attacked by Warren and Sean Griffiths done well to block the ball and convert wide.

After the hour, Guilsfield had a rare chance as Sam Flory looped a header goalwards, as Jones scurried back to see it just drop over the bar.

With the score at 2-0, Airbus made a double substitution with Jake Roberts and the returning Kaiden Cooke replacing Danny Warren and Mason Blackwell-Jones.

69’ Peers was unlucky to open his account as he connected brilliantly with a header as he saw it go agonisingly wide.

Jake Roberts made an impact off the bench, as he got his name on the score sheet. McManus did well to set Cooke, who drove inside and played the ball back out to Peers. The Airbus No.11 delivered an inviting cross into the box and Roberts was able to tap the ball in at the back post.

The second half was a different Airbus side as they looked to have the game in their control as they were 3-0 up. A cross from Jordan Evans was met by Josh Stevenson and his header was over the bar.

With 10 minutes remaining of the 90, Airbus made a double substitution once again with Dan Collins and Blaine Hudson replacing Sam Rickett and Joe Palmer.

On 82’ a powerful shot from Matthews was on target and Keighan Jones got down well to collect comfortably with strong hands.

James Davies had worked his socks off all game and on 83’ he could have topped his game as he found himself through on goal as he got in behind the Guilsfield defence, but his shot was just wide for a goal kick. This was Davies’ last action as he was replaced by Ieuan Jones-Wellstead.

It was great to see Kaiden Cooke back on the pitch after some time out with an injury and he caused difficulties for the visitors as soon as he come on. His cross on 88’ looked to be landing with Peers, but ‘keeper Evans did well to collect the ball.

With a couple of minutes added for injury time, it was Airbus who had the last chance of the game. Roberts played the ball across the box, which Peers connected and his effort come back off the post.

The whistle went on a very windy afternoon at the Hollingsworth Group Stadium, as Airbus put in an excellent second half performance take three points.
