Saturday afternoon we welcomed Llandudno to a warm and sunny Hollingsworth Stadium for Round 1 of the WBS League Cup.
Airbus made two changes to their starting line-up which started against Gresford Athletic in the League. George Peers and Kaiden Cooke replacing Joe Palmer and Danny Warren. Also, there was a welcomed return for Jake Eyre as he was part of the squad for the first time in twelve months.
Llandudno got us underway in the first half.
Airbus had the first chance of the half, when Peers thread a perfectly timed ball through to Sam Baker, who found himself 1v1 with the Llandudno ‘keeper Michael Jones, but Jones got the better of Baker on this occasion.
It wasn’t long before Llandudno had their first chance of the half too. The corner was delivered into the box and the initial contact was cleared by the Airbus defence, but the ball fell to edge of the box and a superb volley looked destined to go in but Keighan Jones tipped the effort over the bar.
The first 20 minutes were quite open, and Airbus were creating the better of the chances. Firstly, there was some great link up play between Peers and Cooke, with Cooke pulling the ball back to Jordan Evans but his effort was blocked with some brilliant defending.
Peers was involved again, this time with some great play between himself and Evans, but it was the same outcome for Evans and his effort was saved by the Llandudno keeper.
After the half hour mark, Llandudno were awarded a penalty when Sam Rickett pulled back Stephens and the referee pointed to the spot. Mark Cadwallader stepped up for the Seasiders, but the Airbus keeper Jones read the penalty and made a fantastic save down to his left to deny Llandudno.
Airbus had their breakthrough not long after the penalty save. Oli Lanceley picked the ball up and drove at the Llandudno defence and he tried to thread the ball through to Evans, but that was cleared by the Seasiders defender Davies. His clearance fell to Cooke, and he delivered a ball in to the box and that was also cleared by Anthony Stephens. Stephen’s clearance looked to have cleared Llandudno’s lines, but Peers had other ideas.
Peers scooped the ball out of the air with his first touch spun and he sent a rocket of right footed shot into the bottom left corner and give Airbus a 1-0 lead.
Airbus’ lead lasted 3 minutes. Some great play from Llandudno working the ball from right to left, found Bennett in a lot of space where he hit his effort first time and curled it into the bottom corner past K.Jones.
Airbus made sure they went into half time with their lead. Evans sent a ball in behind the Llandudno defence for Cooke to use his pace and beat the full back. Cooke drilled a great ball across the 6-yard box and Baker was there at the back post to make it 2-1 to Airbus.
Half time Airbus were forced into a substitution with Jack Wissett replacing Sam Rickett.
Airbus got the second half under way and looking to preserve their lead.
Airbus ‘keeper Jones was called into action quite early in the second half when he saved a curling effort from Dan Jones and then another from close range.
Baker’s clever run allowed him to get in behind the Llandudno defenders, with only the goalkeeper to beat but M.Jones made a great save.
Just before the hour Dan Collins was introduced to the game replacing goal scorer Sam Baker.
Collins had the impact Airbus wanted when the number 15 beat the offside trap and only had the keeper to beat, Collins held his nerve and slotted the ball through M.Jones legs.
Lanceley had a great chance to get himself on the scoresheet, but his effort come crashing off the post.
Keighan was called into action once again with a fantastic save from a great effort from Bennett.
Ten minutes to go and Jake Eyre was introduced to the game, with a great reception after a torrid 12 months with injury. It was great for the whole club to see our No.10 back out on the pitch.
Llandudno did have a last-minute effort, when Cadwallader made a great run to the near post and from the cross he sent his effort wide of the post.
A win for the Wingmakers to progress into the Second round and we await the draw for our round two opponents.
