The WingMakers secured their place in the WBS Cup final for the second consecutive season, as they scored 5 passed Afan Lido to secure their final place.
On a lovely sunny afternoon at the Hollingsworth Group Stadium, Airbus made a few changes to the team that started against Holywell Town on Friday. Blaine Hudson, Kaiden Cooke and Danny Warren replaced Josh Stevenson, Mason Blackwell-Jones and Jake Roberts.
The visitors Afan Lido got us underway for the first half as both teams looked to book their place in the final.
From kick off, Airbus pressed high up the pitch, as George Peers got his head to the ball just before Exauce Dimonekene, and his cross into the box was cleared by the visitors.
A minute later, Airbus were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position as Jordan Evans stood over the set piece. The No.9’s effort was on target as the Afan Lido ‘keeper punched way the shot.
Kaiden Cooke received the ball from Keighan Jones on 7 minutes, who then set Tyler McManus on his way down the right to deliver the ball into the box for Danny Warren, and the forward saw his shot saved.
Warren had another chance shortly after as the ball was played in behind and Dimonekene did well to block the shot.
9’ A ball over the top found James Davies in behind and his shot was just over the bar from close range.
With 13 minutes on the clock, Afan Lido had their first chance of the half, as the ball was played into Liam Griffiths, as he did well to control the ball, but his shot was wide of the post.
Airbus were bombarding the Afan Lido box with lots of crosses, as this time it was Kieran Evans who delivered the ball into the box and Danny Warren was just on the stretch as he couldn’t get the direction on his header.
Evans delivered another ball into the box two minutes later; this time Peers was the player to get his head to the ball as he did well to direct his header goalwards as it just landed over the bar.
25’ it was Jordan Evans turn to deliver a cross into the box, and it fell to James Davies around the penalty spot, and his shot was blocked by Dimonekene.
Just on the half hour mark, Airbus had the ball in the back of the net through Kaiden Cooke, but the goal was disallowed as the Afan Lido keeper was in need of some medial attention. After a lengthy stoppage in the game Dimonekene made his way to his feet to carry on in the game.
5 minutes before half time, Airbus had their lead as they broke the deadlock. Cooke picked the ball up and drove at the visiting defence and played a perfectly timed ball in behind to Davies, who’s great first touch set himself for a great shot across goal into the far corner of the net.
With 7 minutes of injury time, Airbus double their lead two minutes into that added time. A great reversed pass by Nath Williams was into the path of Peers who pushed it pass the keeper into the bottom corner of the net.
Airbus were to have the last chance of the half, as a cross from Kieran Evans was flicked on by Danny Warren, but the official’s flag was up for offside.
Airbus got us back underway for the second half as the sun shone down on the Airfield.
There was another rare chance for Afan Lido as Cameron Keetch found himself in some space down the left as he drove towards the Airbus box, he snatched at his shot as he dragged his effort wide.
56’ Airbus had their third. George Peers did well to control the ball and bring it down under pressure, to play a ball inside to the incoming Danny Warren, who’s initial shot was saved but he made no mistake with his second effort.
The spaces were now opening up for Airbus and Cooke was starting to cause problems for the visitors. His ball into the box was put into the back of the net at the back post by Warren, but the official’s flag halted his celebrations once again.
Just after the hour, Airbus had 4. Cooke again drove down the right, and his cross this time was diverted into his own net by Jackson Hall.
Shortly after Airbus made a double substitution as Mason Blackwell-Jones and Dan Collins replaced Jordan Evans and James Davies.
73’ George Peers was the player this time on the right side of the box as his cross was hung up for Warren arriving at the back post, but his effort was agonisingly wide.
With the tie in a comfortable position for Airbus, they made a triple substitution as they introduced Jake Roberts, Ieuan Jones-Wellstead and James Allen for goal scorers Danny Warren and George Peers, along with the returning Kaiden Cooke.
Roberts had a chance on 84’ as he took the ball down well to get a shot at goal and his effort went wide of the post.
Kieran Evans found himself in space as he received the ball on the left and his shot from long range looked to be settling in the top corner, but Dimonekene did well to get his hand to it to tip round for a corner.
From the resulting corner, a shot from Tyler McManus was blocked. Blaine Hudson has a shot across the goal line and Dan Collins followed up with a shot which just went past the post.
There was three minutes of injury time added, and Airbus finished the game off. Sam Rickett did well to keep the ball under pressure and his turn allowed him to sneak the ball in at the near post to make it 5 to the WingMakers.
Shortly after, the referee blew time on a very comprehensive victory for Airbus as they booked their place in the final for second consecutive season.
