Final game of pre-season preparations ends in a narrow defeat

As we get closer to our Novira Premier League campaign getting underway, Airbus travelled to Clywedog Park to take on Brickfield Rangers in their last game of pre-season.

Brickfield started the brighter of the two teams and a press in the last third by the hosts was good as they won the ball high and a shot from distance was over the bar. They worked the ball well shortly after down the left and a shot across goal was just shy of the far post.

The hosts were flooding the Airbus box with crosses and this time it was a very teasing one which was headed at goal which the Airbus ‘keeper collected.

With 20 minutes gone, Airbus started to see a bit of the ball. A ball into the box from James Allen was overhit which just evaded Trialist A at the back post. A few minutes later there was a great interception by Sean Moscrop in his own half as he drove up the pitch, his brilliant time ball found Trialist A, who did very well to hold the ball up and switch the play for a cross to be played in by Evan Smith which had too much power on it.

Brickfield looked dangerous as they worked the ball well for a cross to the back post, which the Brickfield attacker managed to get his header all wrong as he was unable to direct it goal wards.

With five minutes before the break, Brickfield were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position. The set piece was played to the back post, and the hosts effort was tame as the Airbus comfortably collected.

On 43’ the hosts were awarded a penalty for a foul committed by Brandon Diau, the Brickfield player stepped up to take the spot kick and send the visiting keeper the wrong way.

Airbus headed into the half time break 1-0 down

Brickfield made it 2-0 just after the second half kicked off, a ball to the right of the Airbus box was connected brilliantly as the Brickfield N0.12 caught it on the volley and into the back of the net.

Ten minutes later, Airbus pulled a goal back. A free kick was awarded to Airbus for a foul on Allen and Jordan Evans spotted the gap around the wall and at the near post to direct the set piece into the back of the net.

The goal brought a bit of life into Airbus and the introduction of some fresh legs. A long ball was brought down by substitution Kaiden Cooke who’s cross into the box was just ahead of Jordan Evans.

72’ there was a great passage of play involving Mason Blackwell-Jones, Joe Palmer and Jordan Evans and the Airbus No.9’s cross was cleared for a corner and from the resulting corner a header by Tyler McManus was cleared by the goal line.

Cooke was starting to take the game to the hosts as he drove down the right and delivered a ball into the box where Palmer was able to take the ball down and bring a good reaction save from the Brickfield keeper. From the resulting corner, the host ‘keeper made another fantastic save this time from Cooke.

With 3 minutes remaining, Kieran Evans tried his luck from distance and his effort was wide. The final chance of the game fell to Airbus as Blackwell-Jones’ run in behind the Brickfield defence caused a bit of carnage in the box and his effort was blocked for a corner.

This was the last action of the game as the final whistle went, another 90 minutes in the tank as we look forward to the league starting next week. We would like to thank Brickfield for hosting and wish them all the best for the upcoming season.
