WingMakers crowned NEWFA Senior Challenge Cup Winners after goals from four academy graduates

It was a lovely sunny evening at the Hollingsworth Group Stadium for the NEWFA Senior Challenge Cup Final when Airbus took on Holywell Town.

After our penalty shootout win against Corwen in the semi-final, there was a few changes to the starting line up with Keighan Jones, Tyler McManus, Kieran Evans, Ryan Edwards and George Peers returning to the starting eleven.

As a product of the Airbus Academy, George Peers led Airbus out looking to add their third piece of silverware of the season.

Peers won the toss and chose to switch ends with Airbus shooting towards the road side end.

There was a feisty start to the game as Brady McGilloway forced a strong tackle on Sam Baker, resulting in the Holywell player receiving an early yellow card.

Peers had the first effort of the game when his mazy run allowed him to find space and get a shot off but it was blocked by the Holywell defence.

Airbus were seeing a lot of the ball in the first 10 minutes, and Toby Vickery sent a ball into the channel which was perfectly weighted for Oli Lanceley. Lanceley headed towards goal but he was slighted knocked off balance which allowed Stanton to usher the ball wide.

Peers was finding space in behind the midfield and it looked like he was through on goal on 17’ but his shot was blocked by Myles Hart.

Airbus had their goal lead 5 minutes later through Peers. A line breaking pass from Edwards found Peers on the left hand side of the box whose touch takes him round the Holywell defender and he smashed it passed Stanton.

Holywell nearly had an instant reaction as Jake Roberts picked the ball up on the edge of the area and his effort come crashing off the post.

Roberts found himself in a similar position not long after when this time he tried to curl the ball into the bottom corner but his effort was wide of the far post.

Airbus increased their lead on 32, when a great delivery from Kieran Evans found Josh Stevenson at the back post and he rose higher than anyone else to head the ball into the back of the net.

Jones’ concentration was tested a few minutes after as he made a great save down low to his right to deny McGilloway.

Five minutes before half time, Airbus had their third. Some great pressing work from Ryan Edwards intercepted a Holywell clearance and he looked like he was shaping to shoot, but he played the ball into Sam Baker. He took one touch and he curled an unbelievable effort into the top corner from the left side of the box.

One minute before half time, Edwards played another ball through the Holywell defence which fell into the path of Kaiden Cooke and his shot was saved by Stanton.

The half time whistle went and Airbus went into the half time break with a 3 goal lead.

Holywell came out in the second half looking to get themselves back into the game and they had the first chance of the half.

The ball fell to Beau Cornish on the edge of the box and his wild lash of the ball sent it over on to the road.

Jamie Breese had a relatively quiet game for Holywell but he found himself behind the Airbus defence for the first time but Jones was a match for his effort.

68 minutes and Airbus made their first substitutions of the game with James Davies and Ieuan Jones-Wellstead replacing Sam Baker and Kaiden Cooke.

Davies’ pace caused the Holywell full back problems with his pace instantly and he was able to deliver a cross into the box which saw Lanceley stretching for a header and this didn’t allow him to get the direction on it to send it goalwards.

74 minutes, Jones-Wellstead with some great work as he delivered a ball into the box where he finds Lanceley. The No.19 managed to get his foot to the ball but it comes from the inside of the post
Jones-Wellstead had his name on the score sheet 1 minute later when he mad a great run into the box and connected with a James Davies cross to make it 4-0.

79 minutes, there was a double substitution with Danny Warren and Cam Meredith replacing Toby Vickery and Oli Lanceley.

Holywell did have an effort with 8 minutes remaining when Morgan Murray found himself some space at the back post but he gets his attempted header all wrong.

With 3 minutes left of the 90, Mark Allen changed goal keepers with Sam Fenney replacing Keighan Jones.

There was four minutes of injury time added and Meredith tried his luck from long range but Stanton collected comfortably.

John Jones blew his whistle on the final and Airbus were crowned NEWFA Senior Challenge Cup Winners!
