WingMakers progress to the semi-final of the NEWFA Men’s Senior Challenge Cup.

Airbus travelled to Lex on Tuesday evening looking to book their spot in the semi-final of NEWFA Cup.

Mark Allen decided to go with a youthful side, with only Tyler McManus remaining in the starting 11 from Saturday’s draw against Mold. 10 out of the starting 11 were products of the Airbus Academy.

Lex got us underway kicking left to right looking to cause an upset in the tie.

George Peers had the first chance of the half on 6 minutes, when a lovely, timed ball in behind found Peers which he scored with a great finish but his celebrations were cut short as the offside flag went up.

Lex replied with a chance of their own a minute later as a shot from distance brought a great save from Sam Fenney who managed to push the ball away for a corner.

The first 10 minutes allowed Airbus to get used to a bobbly pitch and Toby Vickery played a ball through the Lex defence which found Peers, but his shot was saved at the front post.

2 minutes later, Airbus had their goal through George Peers. A ball over the top by Tyler McManus was perfectly weight for Peers who timed his run to perfection and slotted the ball past Cameron Dutton.

Airbus doubled their lead on 18 minutes as a corner was swung in brilliantly by Louis Holden which Tom Dougherty met with a fantastic header into the back of the net.

Airbus looked comfortable for the next 10 minutes, but a lack of concentration and a failure to clear their lines allowed Tom Huxley to strike the ball from just outside the box and see his shot nestle in the bottom left-hand corner to give the hosts a little bit of hope.

29 minutes, Oli Lanceley had three brilliant efforts. The first two were blocked by the Lex defenders and his third attempt hit the side netting.

The chances kept on coming for Airbus and it was Peers who was involved once again. Some great play down the right by the visitors released Peers, but his shot was way over the crossbar.

Peers was played in behind not long after and this time he squared the ball for Lanceley which looked destined for the back of the net, but his effort was over the bar.

Sam Baker did will to spin his defender on 40 minutes as he travelled into the Lex penalty area, just as he was about to take his shot, there was an untimely bobbly and Baker’s shot was over the bar.

Lex had a couple of chances just before half time. First chance arrived at Massey’s feet as he found space in behind the Airbus defence but some great defending and goalkeeping from Holden and Fenney.

43 minutes, Louis Bebbington-Rogers put his body on the line with a fantastic block to deny the hosts a second goal.

Bang on 45 minutes, Lex had the last chance of the half. Huxley found himself some space on the edge of the area which allowed him to get a shot away and his effort was just wide, but Fenney had it covered.

Second half was underway, with Airbus looking to extend their lead, and they did just that on 47 minutes. Louis Bebbington-Rogers delivered a great ball to the back post and Peers was there to head is second goal of the game into an empty net.

On the hour, more Academy graduates were introduced to the game with Dan Semple, James Allen and Robbie Jones replacing Tyler McManus, George Peers and Oli Lanceley.

66 minutes, Massey was the one causing a few problems for Airbus and he had a half chance to reduce the deficit, but his effort was wide.

On 68 minutes, Allen gave another Academy graduate a chance with Franek Sadzcuk replacing Ieuan Jones-Wellstead.

Robbie Jones was strong in the tackle and come away with the ball on 77’ and it fell into the path of James Allen who drove with the ball towards goal. Allen played a short pass into Dan Semple who set Sadzcuk, but his shot was wide of the far post.

With 8 minutes remaining of the 90, Dan Semple had his name on the scoresheet. Sadzcuk delivered a fantastic ball into the box from the right and Semple was there to head home with a delicate header.

3 minutes of injury time were added on, and Baker could have made it 5. Toby Vickery played a ball into space for Baker to run on towards goal but his shot was over.

Wingmakers progressed to the semi-finals and will take on Corwen.
