WingMakers Progress to the Semi-Finals of the NEWFA Cup

Tuesday evening, we made the trip to Ruthin Town for a quarter final tie in the NEWFA Men’s Senior Challenge Cup.

With the last league game of the Season on Saturday, Mark Allen made a few changes to the starting line-up, with Josh Stevenson, Dan Collins, Mason Blackwell-Jones and Jake Roberts all making a start for the WingMakers. With Joe Palmer and Jordan Evans both absent the captain’s armband went to Sam Rickett for the evening.

Ruthin got us underway for the evening as both teams were looking for an early goal and 4 minutes in Airbus had the first chance. A good move started with Kaiden Cooke getting the ball into Ieuan Jones-Wellstead, who dug out a cross into the box and Jake Roberts effort was over the bar.

3 minutes later, Cooke this time crossed a ball into the box to find Roberts and his header was just over the bar.

Airbus had the opening goal on 18, a throw in from Jones-Wellstead was played into the feet of Roberts, who did well to hold the ball up and lay it back to the Airbus No.7. The ball then was played into Collins who played a first time cross into the box, which James Davies did well to head the ball down into Cooke’s feet on the edge of the box. The winger did a nice little turn to find himself a yard of space to hit it right footed shot into the back of the net.

Just before the half hour, Jake Roberts sent a cross into the Ruthin box, but unfortunately the ball had too much pace on it for James Davies to get on the end of, as it ran past his foot and out for a goal kick. Few minutes later a ball was delivered into the box which was met by Josh Stevenson and his header was superbly tipped over the bar by Goldston.

The hosts did well to work the ball for a cross to the back post to find Dan Cox and his header was goal bound but Rickett and Jones did well to clear their lines.

41’ and Airbus had their second. A brilliantly delivered corner by Blackwell-Jones was converted at the back post by Blaine Hudson. And Airbus weren’t done as they added a third on the stroke of half time.

Sam Rickett did well to bring the ball down under control and calmly pass the ball into Collins, who’s perfectly weighted pass over the top was into the path of James Davies who hit his shot first time into the bottom left hand corner of the net.

The referee blew shortly after for half time, as Airbus entered the half time break, 3 goals to the good.

Jake Roberts got us back underway for the second half and 5 minutes in, Airbus had a 4th. It was a well worked team goal as Davies played the ball back to Jones-Wellstead, who then found Stevenson as he played the ball into Blackwell-Jones, his pass was intercepted by the hosts to only fall into the path of Roberts. His strong hold up play allowed him to play a drag back into the on coming Blackwell-Jones for him to finish him first time across Goldston.

Two minutes after Airbus scoring their fourth, there was very good link-up play on the edge of the box from Mann and Holland as they set Tom Roberts for a shot just outside the box, his shot was on target but straight into the hands of Jones.

With 65 minutes on the clock, Airbus made a triple substitution with James Allen, Danny Warren and Franek Sadczuk replacing Mason Blackwell-Jones, Jake Roberts and Kaiden Cooke.

It took Allen 4 minutes to get his name on the scoresheet. Rickett found Stevenson with some space to carry the ball into and play the ball down the line to Jones-Wellstead, who played a ball into the channel for Davies as his pass back to Jones-Wellstead was perfect as they linked up well. The Airbus No.7 pulled the ball back to around the penalty spot and there was James Allen to finish first time into the corner of the net.

It was 6 for Airbus on 71 minutes. The ball started with Keighan Jones as he found Collins who had dropped to receive the ball in space and after a few touches to drive with the ball forward and a lofted a pass over the top for Rickett to flick on into Sadczuk’s path. Sadczuk’s quick feet and drop of the shoulder allowed him to pull the ball back to Danny Warren who was entering the box and for the striker to finish first time.

Warren had another chance to give himself a second goal of the game as Hudson sent a long pass into Davies, who did well to knock down for Warren and his strike from the edge of the box was just wide of the far post.

With the tie secured, Airbus were equipped to make another substitution as Nath Williams replaced Kieran Evans for the last 15 minutes.

Williams’ first action was to win a header from a Ruthin throw-in, as Sadczuk picked up the ball and his pass into Allen was superb, but the young midfielder ran out of space to get the shot off as Goldston collected.

84 minutes, Ruthin had a great chance for a consolation goal. A goal kick from Goldston was pumped up the pitch and flicked on for some neat play down the left, the cross into the box was met by Thomas Mann and his flick on at the near post brought a reaction save from Jones.

Ruthin were awarded a free kick shortly after, Daniel Holland stepped up to take the set piece, but his effort was comfortably collected by Jones.

As we approached the end of the 90, Stevenson played the ball into Rickett who found Allen with around the corner pass. Allen dropped a ball over the Ruthin defence for Warren, who’s first time shot brought a good save from Goldston as he pushed it for a corner.

Ruthin had the last chance of the game as they worked the ball well down the right for a pass to find Holland on the edge of the area and his shot was just wide of the post.

The whistle went on good night for Airbus as they progressed to the semi-final to set up a tie against Penyfford Lions FC at The Hollingsworth Group Stadium.
