Our fourth pre-season game, and we took a trip to the Wirral to take on Vauxhall Motors on a lovely summer evening.
The game started very physical for both teams, and it was Airbus with the first chance of the game. A clearance from the Airbus goalkeeper found George Peers in some great space and his first touch to take it out of the air was brilliant, which allowed him to turn and run at the Vauxhall defence. Peers created his own space to get a shot off, but his effort took a deflection which made it easy for the host keeper to collect.
The hosts took the lead with quarter of an hour gone, when Airbus failed to clear a long throw in and the ball was poked in at the back post.
Airbus replied very quickly to Vauxhall’s opening goal. Sam Rickett picked the ball up in the midfield and drove with the ball into the Vauxhall half, where he played a perfectly timed pass into Kaiden Cooke’s path, who’s shot was saved and pushed out to the edge of the penalty box, where Jordan Evans was there to finish and put the ball into the back of the net.
The goal got Airbus playing again and this time it was a searching cross field pass from Peers which found Jake Roberts on the left, whose first touch was great to take it away from the Vauxhall defender inside, but the Airbus forward went for a lob but got it all wrong.
Vauxhall were still putting Airbus under pressure and this time an inside pass from Kieran Evans was intercepted and the Vauxhall captain hit a shot from just outside the box which shaved the post, which had the Airbus goalkeeper scrambling.
Vauxhall were starting to come back into the game as the game approached half time. Another shot from outside the box brought a save from the visiting keeper as he was able to push the ball away from goal.
Just before the half time whistle there was some great link-up play between Kieran Evans and Kaiden Cooke, who’s cross into the box was headed away by the hosts, but just as far as Roberts on the edge of the area and his shot was straight at the ‘keeper.
The second half started and it was Airbus with the first effort as a brilliant run by Cooke and his shot was tipped on to the post for a corner by the Vauxhall ‘keeper.
Airbus took the lead for the first time in the game around 50 minutes. Rickett with a great ball into Cooke who drove at the Vauxhall defence, and he dispatched a powerful shot into the bottom corner from the left side of the box.
Cooke was starting to have a real impact on the game as another run inside from a fantastic ball from Peers and Cooke’s effort from the right was headed off the line.
Another effort shortly after from Jordan Evans came crashing off the post.
Vauxhall were level with 15 minutes to play. The hosts delivered a corner into a packed Airbus box which was initially cleared only to a Vauxhall player and the ball was hooked back into the box and was headed in at the back post.
Airbus weren’t behind long as they re-took the lead four minutes later. Airbus were awarded a free kick, which Jordan Evans delivered into the box and trialist A rose higher than everyone else to head home at the back post.
With 8 minutes remaining, Airbus made it 4. Trialist B out run his defender down the right and his cross into the box was diverted into the Vauxhall goal by the hosts defender.
The game finished with one last effort for Airbus. Rickett collected the ball as he read the game very well and his ball into space behind the Vauxhall defence found Trialist C, who tried to lob the oncoming Vauxhall ‘keeper but it was just over the bar.
We would like to thank Vauxhall Motors for hosting and wish them all the best for their upcoming Season!
