Three things we learned: Holyhead Hotspur

Read the three main takeaways as the Wingmakers fought back from a goal down to win 1-2 at Holyhead Hotspur.

Jay Gibbs fired Holyhead ahead in the first half before the midfielder was sent off soon after for a late tackle on Adam Davies.

The Bus overcame the deficit in the second period. Oli Lanceley and Ryan Edwards goals secured victory to send Airbus seven points clear at the top of the JD Cymru North table.

We take a look at three things we learnt from an enthralling match at the New Stadium.

The Wingmakers can fight back

The hosts started the game on the front foot and were rewarded for their efforts when Gibbs found the bottom corner with a curling strike from the edge of the area. It was the first time Steve O’Shaughnessy’s side had trailed in a league encounter since Holywell Town grabbed a temporary lead at the Hollingsworth Group Stadium in October.

Whilst Holyhead losing Gibbs to a red card before half time handed Airbus a great opportunity to make the man advantage count, it was never going to be a simple task due to Holyhead’s solid defensive set-up and a tricky pitch to contend with.

Two crucial Airbus goals in the second half earned a triumph which showed how the Bus can succeed in different ways. Even when the chips are seemingly down, O’Shaughnessy’s men can eventually rediscover usual performance levels and pick up vital points to aid title aspirations.

Peers determined to give the boss selection headache

The dazzling form of Jake Eyre in recent weeks has meant George Peers has been a main attacking option on the bench. Following a lively cameo performance at Llangefni Town on matchday 15, Peers once again made his mark as a substitute.

Aaran Edwards was replaced at the interval by the young winger as the boss looked to introduce an increased attacking spark. Peers delivered an all-action display to help Airbus come out on top.

In his first involvement, the academy graduate slipped a ball through the eye of a needle to Lanceley who converted one-on-one. Peers continued to impress after his eye-catching assist with his sharpness and end product, as well as contributing defensively on the right-hand side.

Extending the lead at the top of the table

Title challengers, Llandudno and Guilsfield, played out a goalless draw at the weekend. With both sides dropping points and the Bus adding another three to the tally, the gap at the summit has now stretched to seven points.

A near fully fit squad at O’Shaughnessy’s disposal for the first time this season provides a realistic chance for the Bus to continue to pile the pressure on teams below to remain within touching distance.

However, four months of football is yet to be played. Guilsfield also still have two games in hand. Plenty of twists and turns are still possible but the Wingmakers are currently in a great position as the New Year fast-approaches.
