Treowen Stars FC Await the WingMakers in the WBS Cup Final

On Saturday afternoon, Airbus make the trip to Latham Park, the home of Newtown to take on Treowen Stars FC looking to retain the WBS Cup.

Airbus’ journey started back in August last year, when they welcomed fellow JD Cymru North side Mold Alexandra to the Airfield. Mold took the lead on the day through Owen Cordiner after 8’ minutes, but Mason Blackwell-Jones clawed Airbus level just before the half hour mark. Airbus took the lead early in the second half as Danny Warren made it 2-1 scoring against his old team, from a Jordan Evans delivery for the striker to tap in. Airbus secured their place in the next round as George Peers got his name on the scoresheet, as he got his head on the end of a brilliant cross from Sam Baker at the back post.

The 3-1 win against Mold set up another home tie, this time it was against our promotion rivals Holywell Town. The game started very cagey as most games do between Airbus and Holywell and John Danby made numerous saves to deny the home team a goal, but 4 minutes before half time, Airbus took the lead after Kaiden Cooke beat numerous players to fire a cross into the box and Warren did what strikers do and poked the ball in the net at the back post. George Peers secured the tie with a second goal 64 minutes, again from another Kaiden Cooke assist.

The quarter finals we welcomed Newtown AFC to the Hollingsworth Group Stadium. In the league there had been a draw and a win to Airbus between both teams. Newtown took the lead on the day through Jamie Hyne, whose brilliant shot gave the visitors the lead. Jordan Evans pulled the Wingmakers level in injury time of the first half as he curled a brilliant shot into the far corner of the net. Danny Warren made it 2-1 to Airbus early in the second half as he finished with a volley from a Jordan Evans pass. The game was finished off by Jake Roberts with an unbelievable first touch to lob the goalkeeper after a long ball from Kieran Evans to score his first goal for Airbus.

A spot in the semi final and another home tie, as we welcomed JD Cymru South Afan Lido to the Airfield. A 5-0 win for Airbus gave them a spot in the final for the second consecutive season. James Davies opened the scoring with a lovely shot across goal from a Kaiden Cooke assist. George Peers made it 2 before half time with a across the keeper from a reversed pass from Nath Williams. Danny Warren made it 3 with his second effort after his shot was initially saved. An own goal by Jackson Hall gave Airbus a fourth after some great work by Kaiden Cooke. To finish the afternoon off, Airbus secured their place in the Final, as Sam Rickett did well to hold the ball up and on the turn sneak a shot in at the near post.

Our opponents have had a few close games with their journey to the final. Their first game was against Caerau Ely FC, where they initially went 2-0 up before half time and added a third in the second through Carter Campbell. Caerau Ely scored in the 72nd and 79th minute to give the game a nervy end, but Treowen did well to see the game out and progress.

The next round they were on the road again as they made the trip to Ammanford AFC, the hosts took the lead in the 20th minute before Corey Jenkins levelled the score. The game ended 1-1 and went into penalties, Treowen scored all their 5, with Morgan Clarke missing his penalty for Ammanford AFC.

In the quarter finals, Treowen welcomed Llantwit Major AFC to the CCB Centre for sporting excellence. Treowen started the game really well scoring 2 in 5 minutes with Thomas Meechan with the double. Llantwit pulled one back early on in the second half, but the Stars seen the game out winning 2-1.

The semi-final seen them take a trip to JD Cymru North side Buckley Town FC, in a north v south tie. Buckley took the lead on 53’ minutes through Aled Bellis and with the game entering the last minute of the 90’, Lewis Green equalised for the south side to take the game into penalties. With Treowen scoring all their 4 penalties they progressed to the final to set up a tie with Airbus.
