Young Wingmakers - Academy Weekend Review & Team Of The Week

Airbus Academy Administrator30 Jan 2023 - 22:49

Fixtures Played On 28th & 29th January 2023

U7

Our U7s took an early morning trip up to Fleetwood on Sunday. A very warm welcome by Fleetwood staff and fantastic facility set us up for a good morning ahead. Both teams taking a while to really get going with no goals scored with the first fifteen minutes. The game began to open up a bit then with both teams scoring in what was a closely contested game. The second Fleetwood team brought some more physicality which took our lads by shock but eventually began to adjust to the intensity needed and scoring 3/4 goals in the second half. All in all a good trip up with plenty of learning opportunities for this new squad. (Rhys Hewitt - Head Of Foundation Phase)

Player of the week:

Harry Hughes - Harry was relentless when it came to his off the ball work and making tackles. His energy was matched when he had the ball often having moments to dribble into space and attack Fleetwood.

U8

Another great morning of football against a decent Fleetwood team, we started a bit slowler than Fleetwood which caused us a few problems, but we quickly realised we had to speed up our play and close down our opponents winning our battles, player’s determination energy and desire was really pleasing to see. Our boys attitutes and pace was superb playing on a big pitch with no substitutes. I thought as the games went on, we had the momentum and were able to find solutions to the problems they caused, chasing back not giving fleetwood time on the ball, winning 1v1 battles and some quality finishing. As a coach, I couldn’t ask any more from the players today and they represented Airbus brilliantly. (Pete Sutton - U8 Coach)

Players of the week:

Toby Kitchen - Incredible energy levels, up and down the pitch, sprinting back 20/30 yards to win his 1v1 battle. Great drive and skill with the ball, scoring great goals.

Lewis Ashibi - Solid defending. Being brave and looking to bring other players into play with the ball.

U9

A busy weekend for the u9's which started on Friday night away against a strong Saughall side. Athough the performance was of a good standard, our young wingmakers struggled to find the back of the net in a game dominated by ourselves. On Saturday, we had one team playing Waverton AFC and the other playing Chester Nomads. Both teams excelled and produced a great show of football. Finally, we had an early start on Sunday game as we travelled to Lancashire to play Pro Club opposition in Fleetwood town. A strong performance ended a brilliant weekend of football. (Gary Williams - U9 Coach)

Players of the week:

Lewis Rankin - Outstanding defending and playing out from the back.

Freddie Argyle - Showed excellent technical ability and determination to drive forward, whilst playing the ball in to dangerous positions in the opponents half.

U10

An exciting game against Wrexham away. A very good start making plenty of chances but unfortunately not finishing clinically enough. Going a goal down the lads picked themselves up and went on to score plenty of goals. One of our goals came from a 20+ pass combination finishing off with a cross from Osian Evans to the back post for Max to tap it in. (Leigh Owens - U10 Coach)

Player of the week:

Max Derbyshire - Showed great determination throughout and got himself on to the score sheet.

U11

The young wingmakers were tested against a dominant Wrexham side this weekend. With Wrexham pressing with pace it forced us to move the ball quickly in possession. When on the ball Wrexham played some great football which allowed Airbus to focus on their out of possession principles of play. When winning the ball back Airbus found themselves in good areas but the ball just couldn’t find the back of the net. (Tegan Hewitt - U11 Coach)

Player of the week:

James Evans - Some brilliant saves to keep Wrexham at bay and his decision making for distributing the ball was amazing.

U12

It was another two-game weekend for the u12s kicking off with a home game on Saturday where Liverpool-based Page Celtic were the visitors. Celtic were the ideal opponents as their high-pressing style game Airbus lots of of opportunity to work on their problem solving skills whilst building up play at the back. The Young Wingmakers made it hard for themselves in the first half through a lack of movement. However, they took this information on well at half time and were much improved in the second half. Sunday involved a trip to Wrexham, another quality opposition and another closely fought contest. The game was more physical than than of the day prior, but Airbus tried to apply their principles and at times had some good success. The smaller pitch gave them another learning opportunity and we will continue to work on the speed of transition this week in training. (Marc Edwards - U12 Coach)

Player of the week:

Jack Mitchell - Two outstanding back-to-back performances from the Airbus number six. Defensively solid, but also provided a moment of brilliance to open up the Wrexham defence and set up an Airbus goal.

U12 Girls

In the first game of the second phase of our league season the girls produced a dominant display. It was encouraging to see the girls playing out from the back with such assurance and also repeatedly recovering the ball high up the pitch. There was also sone excellent passing consistently breaking lines. Special mention to Dara Acquaye who scored 5 goals and Imogen Pugh who played some excellent passes out of defence and scored another goal of the month contender. The score finished Airbus 6 Brickfield 1. (Nick Jones - U12 Girls Coach)

Player of the week:

Neveah Byles - In the first half Neveah gave an excellent defensive performance stepping in to intercept when required and delaying attacks and forcing opponents away from goal. She was also very assured in possession and made a number of excellent passes out of defence. Well done Neveah.

U13

A game of 2 halves - it took us a while to sort out our bearings defensive wise with a couple of lads playing in unfamiliar positions and we got caught out twice from set pieces...something that we will learn from quickly, but despite us being 'off the pace' in a number of areas across the pitch...we managed to stay in the game with good saves from both keepers Bailey & Bobby. Thus we managed to get ourselves in the game when we struck the ball into the top corner after good work from Nataniel Rakowiecki. 1-2 and a number of points given to the lads during the break - we had to improve. The response from the lads was excellent. We scored an equaliser with Captain Alex Mossman heading in an equaliser from a corner. We then had a couple of chances, looked hungry throughout and we could have gone 3-2 up only to be thwarted by the excellent Wrexham goalkeeper. The game could have gone either way. The last 2 minutes was harsh on the lads - as from us playing through Wrexham's midfield and Nataniel smashing the post from 20 yards out...straight to a debatable referee decision in the favour of our opposition for a last minute corner and a scruffy rebound that went into the roof of our net. Fine margins and if this U13 squad continue to play like we did in the 2nd half and take on board the detail...they won't go far wrong. Well done lads (Mike Phythian - U13 Coach).

Player of the week:

Aaron Charles - played in his secondary position throughout the entire match due to players being away. His 2nd half performance was faultless and it is great to see the improvement week by week.

U19

Airbus 19’s played host to a well organised Caernarfon team at the Hollingsworth Stadium this weekend. Initially starting the better of the two teams Airbus took an early lead through a wide free kick for a nice headed goal from Tyler McManus in the first few minutes however somehow went in to the break 2-1 down though some good spells of possession from our opponents. Starting the second half the brighter of the two teams Airbus quickly put the visitors to the sword missing chance after chance early in the second half. The 19’s dominated a lot of the second half and saw the reward for their hard work in the 80 minute when Linden Puckey slotted home a misplaced ball under pressure from the opposition keeper. Shortly after this Finn Savage calmly volleyed home the winner on the 85’ from a fantastic phase of play from the right hand side Jack Bains Hughes manages to pull off nothing short of perfect delivery to give the 19’s their first win of the new year. (Richard Cusato - U19 Coach)

Player of the week:

Jack Baines Hughes - Played 180 minutes over the weekend and really dug in when his team needed him. Jack has been excellent this week and always gives 100% and does it with a smile on his face. Top person top player!
