Young Wingmakers - Academy Weekend Review

Airbus Academy Administrator7 Feb 2023 - 21:48

Fixtures Played 4th & 5th February 2023

U7

The under 7’s had the opportunity of an away fixture at Blackburn Rovers, the boys arrived with an excellent work ethic against good opposition, applying their skills and expressing themselves freely responding to the guidance of their coaches they created lots of chances and played with intensity and enthusiasm.

Player's of the week:

Team Airbus

Carter Swaine - In goal Carter showed the heart of a lion putting his body on the line for his team mates many times, coupled with shot stopping that showed his hard work at GK training is paying off!

Team Wingmakers

Isaac Duffy - Isaac, like the little Duracell battery that he is, started the game quickly out of possession engaging with opponents to win the ball back at the earliest opportunity and use it efficiently to bring his team mates into play. A real hearty performance that was full of energy and packed plenty of physicality with good decision making all round.

U8

Winter Football Festival - A break in Academy fixtures allowed us to arrange this mini fun festival with TNS, Nomads and Reaching Peaks in attendance. Short game format meant the boys had to play quickly with high intensity and short sharp passing to create as many chances as possible. The small pitches forced the boys into using their skill acquisition to win 1v1 bottles to get out of tight areas all over the pitch and turn those moments onto chances to score and there were plenty of highlight reel goals on show. The last game was Airbus V Wingmakers which ended, fittingly, in a draw. A great experience for all.

Player's of the week

Team Airbus

George Graydon - New signing George showed his desire to get on the ball at every opportunity, his movement off the ball to create space for himself was clear to see and he ran his heart out all morning showing a real pride in his football - well done George.

Team Wingmakers

Albie Dodd - Albie was as alive as ever causing lots of problems for the opposition with his close ball control and frightening finishing. Albie showed a fantastic awareness linking up with team mates and finding passing angles, something we’ve worked on in training this week. Well Done Alb.

U9

This weekend saw our U9s take a long trip to play Leeds Utd.  The game started really strong and our young wingmakers showed excellent determination and played some brilliant football.  Sunday was a shorter trip to play st Asaph where the boys put on an outstanding display of football.

Player of the week:

Kai Adam’s - Showed great drive with use of the wingmaker moves...rewarding him in loads of goals.

U11

U11 v NFA 12’s

Today our focus was transitions from in to out of possession. The young wingmakers were able to maintain this throughout which resulted in us being dominant when in possession. Individuals performances were brilliant throughout and players were excellent in 1v1 battles. Also, some brilliant goals on display too!

Player of the week:

Thomas Wright - Tom's performance all round was brilliant. Out of possession he took on the information and applied it very well. When on the ball Tom showed some brilliant skill and decision making which resulted in him getting 2 goals.

U11s V Preston North End

A slightly different type of game on Sunday for the young wingmakers as we made the trip to Preston North End. It was important that we stuck to the out of possession principles of the game we have worked on in order to attack the Preston defence. As a team the wingmakers shown grit and determination which they were rewarded with plenty of goals and coming out as overall winners.

Player of the week:

Frank Jones - Frank has had a positive weekend of football, taking on information and applying to his game. His work ethic off the ball was superb also which resulted in him getting a few goals too!

U12

It was another match-packed weekend for the under 12s with back-to-back games against older opposition. Saturday saw the young Wingmakers make the trip to Wrexham to play Queens Park U13s. With the focus on individual development, the players were set individual targets, that for some required them to play out of their comfort zone. All players did a fantastic job and each were able to take something from the game. On Sunday they played host to Colwyn Bay U13s. Rising to the challenge Airbus worked incredibly hard continuing to practice their key principles against top quality opposition. They were required to work really hard in their moments of transition and has some great success in retaining the ball. A fantastic learning opportunity for all involved.

Player of the week:

Jack Owen - The young attacker rose to the individual challenges set for him on the Saturday and battled incredibly in the physical element to the game on Sunday. Well done Jack!

U13

A long journey away to Preston North End for the U13's to play 11 aside in preparation for next season. A very sloppy start in our own box meant that we were 1 down inside 5 minutes. We recovered well and played ourselves back into the match and went 2-1 up with goals from Nataniel Rakowiecki & Fin Hayes. We then conceded a another poor goal for their equaliser and then a misunderstanding whereby the referee asked asked us stop for a Preston player to tie his shoe lace, but then played on allowed the Preston team to walk the ball home...2-3 and we were unlucky at half time. An offside goal and a fine strike went against us in the 2nd half, but we did score through Alfie Neal. Lots to work on - the players will get used to the distances on the bigger pitch and all players will benefit from the experience.

Player of the week:

Fin Geary - Faultless at right back throughout the fixture. Covered well out of possession and used the ball well when in possession.

U15

A great first half performance was the highlight of this match against our opponents who were a year older. Airbus were 4 up after 30 minutes, and adapted well to the new formation. 2 goals from Frazer Holding were followed by a goal each from Harry Jones and Liam Bevan. The first half Airbus dominated possession and created chances. We could have come in at half time with an even better score line. It was always going to difficult to sustain the first half performance levels but there was still some good play and chances created. Liam Bevan got his second of the match, and again, Airbus could have got more on a different day with some better finishing. Cefn Mawr did get a one back towards the end of the game, but overall it was a great performance, again rehearsing a couple of formations, ready to taking into the second half of the season.

Player of the week:

Frazer Holding - Two Goals and Two Assists for Frazer who was hard working throughout. Showing a great attitude to win the ball back out of possession, and linking the play up well, along with showing his adaptability to play in multiple positions.

U19

19’s hosted a good Flint 19’s this afternoon at the Hollingsworth stadium. Flint started the better of the two sides putting Airbus 19’s under lots of early pressure keeping the ball high in our half.
Airbus 19’s weathered the storm and mid way through the first half started to get some control of the game winning some free kicks in dangerous areas. The hard works paid off with a good goal at the end of the first half, ending the half 1-0 up.
Second half we started well however gave away a penalty early in the half which was dispatched making it 1-1. The majority of the second half Airbus had control of the game and created chance after chance we could just not finish in the final third. Final score 1-1.

Player of the week:

Tom Dougherty - Tom is always consistent in training but has stepped up this last week. Tom was outstanding in the game, dealing with the Flint forwards well and picking some great forward passes.

U17 Girls

Another great performance from the girls this morning against a very determined Northop Hall team. Some excellent movement and decision making today. Goals were scored by Charlotte, Carys, Laura (2), Ruby (Sparky) (2)

Player of the week:

Ruby B - Excellent performance
