Solid Start v Colwyn Bay Academy

The U12 FAW Academy Cup started with a home fixture v Colwyn Bay Academy, with both teams adhering to the strict covid regulations that are in place.

Our opposition are much improved this season as they have adopted the well organised (last seasons) U11 Rhyl Academy coaches & majority of players. Thus we knew that we were in for a tricky fixture - as our referee Mr Wilday got the match underway.

Airbus started on the front foot and had most of the play in the early stages, but it was far from comfortable as Colwyn Bay looked to counter and broke quickly from midfield.

Most of our play seemed involve Jack Fox Cody & Aleksei Williams down the left hand side due to the strong wind in that direction, but we just couldn't convert our possession into goals. As the half progressed we had a few chances with the Colwyn Bay keeper making 2 good saves. Lewys Williams scored a goal only for the referee to disallow for offside. There were a couple of half chances for both sides , but the score was 0-0 at the break.

The start of the 2nd half was also tight, as our visitors continued to adapt their defensive, counter attacking style and invited the Young Wingmakers to attack.

Airbus eventually took the lead when Toby Lemon latched on to a fine through ball from the midfield, with a fine strike past the opposition keeper. He took that chance early, which gave the keeper no chance.

We thought that our opposition would change tactics and press us, but they continued to counter attack from deep. It didn't cause us many problems, with Harri Phythian & Owen J Williams being very solid in defence along with the excellent Damian Dziadowski in goal.

Airbus pushed for the 2nd goal and this eventually came when Fin Lavery played an inch perfect through ball to debutant Oliver Tyndall who stroked home with a fine left foot finish.

The match finished 2-0 as Mr Wilday brought the match to a conclusion.

The result was better than the performance today. Although we were very solid, we have plenty to work on & will improve in key areas during future matches.

We wish Colwyn Bay well for the rest of the season.
