Airbus made the trip to an overcast Bastion Gardens the home of Prestatyn Town to take on Flint Mountain in the JD Cymru North looking to extend their unbeaten run and keep themselves at the top of the table.
After a goalless draw against Holywell Town last Friday, Mark Allen made a couple changes to his staring line-up with James Davies and Oli Lanceley coming in to replace Kaiden Cooke and Nathan Williams.
Airbus got us underway for the afternoon looking to take home three points.
The opening 12 minutes was a very scrappy affair as both teams tried to get the ball down and play but the uneven surface didn’t allow anyone to play football.
20 minutes, Airbus were awarded a free kick in a dangerous area, and this time George Peers took the rains. Peers stepped up to take the set piece, but he was unable to get his effort up and over to trouble Dominic Garner in the Flint Mountain goal.
Some quick thinking by James Davies on 24’ allowed Danny Warren to get a flick on from a throw in, which forced the Flint Mountain defence to clear to Peers who was waiting on the edge of the area, but his effort was wide.
From the resulting goal kick, the Flint Mountain captain Kieran Owens found some space inside, and it opened up for him to try his luck from just outside the box. The effort had Keighan Jones a little worried, but he was confident enough to see it sail wide.
Another quick throw in on 31’ was flicked on by Oli Lanceley into the path of Peers on the left-hand side on the penalty box and from tight angle he took the shot on but it hit the side netting.
Five minutes before half time, Flint Mountain had a chance through Jonny O’Sullivan as he wasn’t closed down by the Airbus defence. His effort was close to finding the bottom corner but lucky for Airbus it was past the post.
As the game entered injury time for the first half, there was some great link-up play between Jordan Evans and Mason Blackwell-Jones, as the No.14 found Danny Warren and as the Airbus forward went to connect, the ball bobbled in front of him and his strike come off his shin and over the bar.
The referee blew on a half of football where both teams were looking for the breakthrough.
At half time, Airbus made a substitution with Tyler McManus replacing Danny Warren.
For the second half, Flint Mountain got us underway as the temperature was starting to drop on an Autumn afternoon.
Airbus started the second half on the front foot as a change in formation started to cause Flint Mountain some problems.
53’ Jordan Evans delivered a brilliant cross into the hosts box which they managed to clear, the clearance fell to Sam Rickett in a great position on the edge of the box but the midfielder was unable to get over the ball to keep his shot down.
George Peers followed with an effort shortly after as Flint Mountain were careless and Jordan Evans read the situation to find Peers. His shot was dragged wide unfortunately by the Airbus No.11.
It had been one way traffic in the second half, but the hosts found themselves in a good position as Kieran Owens found space in the Airbus box. Owens shot had little direction as it was played straight at Jones.
Just after the hour mark, Airbus had the breakthrough, and they managed to get through the resilience of the home side. Kieran Evans made his mind up with a strike from distance, which took a slight deflection, and this guided it past Garner to give Airbus a 1-0 lead.
After a time out being injured and increasing his match fitness, Oli Lanceley was replaced by Kaiden Cooke as the Airbus forward made steps forward to getting match fit.
Flint Mountain has a glimpse of goal on 76’. There was some good build up play and this allowed Joe Ly to get in behind the Airbus defence, and his strike was just a little wayward.
Blackwell-Jones’ determination won the ball in the Flint Mountain box, but his resulting cross was too close to Garner as the goalkeeper collected easily.
As Airbus’ game management crept into the game as the minutes were ticking down and Peers tried to take the ball into the corner. Sekouba Camara won the ball back and as Peers tried to win the ball back, he clipped the defenders’ heels, and he went into the referees book as he received a yellow card for his foul.
Jordan Evans tried his look with a dink as he saw the ‘keeper off his line but his effort just landed on top of the net.
As we headed into injury time, George Peers looked to have timed his run, but the linesman’s flag halted his run and his frustration led to him kicking the ball away and a second yellow car followed.
James Davies was full of energy and work rate all game long and 96th minute he found himself in space as he travelled with ball towards goal and with Garner a little off his line, the Airbus No.20 chipped the ‘keeper with a powerful shot to give Airbus a 2-0 win and three points.
