A late equaliser from Peers gives Airbus a point

On a cold and wet Saturday afternoon, Airbus travelled to nearby Flintshire rivals Mold Alexandra for their next game in the JD Cymru North.

After a courageous performance against Flint Town in the FAW Welsh Cup last weekend, Mark Allen made two changes to his starting line-up, with George Peers and Joe Palmer replacing Tyler McManus and Mason Blackwell-Jones.

With the sun making an appearance for kick off, Mold got us underway for the afternoon.

On a heavy grass pitch, Mold were seeing more of the ball in the opening exchanges, and it was the hosts who had the first attempt on goal as a header from Lucas Gregson hit the woodwork via deflection.

Danny Warren had the first chance for Airbus in the 11th minute as he received the ball from outside the box, but his effort was high.

18 minutes in and Mold had the lead. A long throw in from Matty Lewis was headed towards goal by Harvey Morris and his effort hit the back post and in.

27’ A ball in by Sam Baker was headed clear by Morgan Roberts with Danny Warren lurking behind him for a tap in. Shortly after Sam Rickett picked the ball up in midfield and played the ball into George Peers, which Peers delivered a great ball into the box that was picked up by Warren, but his effort was offside.

Airbus were starting to have a lot more of the ball and on 37’ Jordan Evans found himself some space but his effort at goal was tame and Joseph Smith was able to collect the ball comfortably.

The WingMakers were forcing pressure on the Mold goal and this time it started from the hands of Keighan Jones. The Airbus ‘keeper collect a cross from Mold, and he set Baker on a run and after a passage of play the ball fell to the captain Joe Palmer. His shot tested Smith and he was able to tip Palmer’s effort round the post for corner.

From the resulting corner, Nathan Williams was able to get his head to the delivery, but it looped up and into the hands of Smith.

As we entered injury time for the first half, Williams played a lovely ball into Baker’s path, and he ran at the Mold box, but his cross was too close to Smith who collected easily.

After the half time break, Airbus got us underway for the second half as they looked to get themselves back into the game.

An early substitution in second half saw James Davies replace Sam Rickett.

Some great work by Owen Cordiner on 58 minutes allowed him to pull the ball back to James Davies, where the Mold Alex No.18 looked certain to score with an open goal in front of him, but he somehow missed the target.

As we approached an hour of the game played, Mason Blackwell-Jones replaced Sam Baker.

A great delivery from Jordan Evans from a corner was met by Joe Palmer but his header couldn’t be directed towards goal and his flick on travelled wide. From the resulting goal kick, Mold progressed up the pitch and a over head kick in a crowded box from Harry Cartwright brought a good save from Keighan Jones.

Airbus were awarded a corner on 63’ after a block from a Mold Player. The corner from the left was attempted to be cleared by the hosts but it fell to Williams unmarked, and his effort was blasted over the crossbar from close range.

Blackwell-Jones was starting to have an impact down the left-hand side and his cross this time was met by Peers; the Airbus No.11 was unable to direct his effort towards goal.

Kieran Evans delivered a cross on 74’ and it brought a save from Smith as it looked to be going over the bar, but it was just about to drop in until Smith tipped the effort for a corner.

77’ Ryan Coney did well to win the ball from Williams, and the Mold midfielder played the ball into Cordiner who had the goal in front of him and his shot was straight at the Airbus ‘keeper Jones.

There was a last throw of the dice for Airbus with 10 minutes of the 90, as Blaine Hudson and Tyler McManus replaced Kieran Evans and Ieuan Jones-Wellstead. And Hudson had the ball in the back of net 2 minutes later.

A cross from the left was met by Hudson with a powerful header which saw the net ripple, but the linesman’s flag halted the celebrations as he ruled the tall defender offside.

With 84 minutes gone, James Davies was shown a red card. This didn’t stop Airbus’ pressure on the Mold goal and Hudson’s strike was superbly denied by a brilliant block by Harvey Morris.

With Airbus chasing an equaliser, Mold’s forward Cordiner found himself in on goal with no one near him to stop him, but some brilliant tracking back from Jordan Evans halted him in his tracks.

88 minutes and Airbus had that equaliser and it was that man George Peers. It was a great individual goal as he collected the ball, and great footwork allowed him to score from a very acute angle.

Not long after the equaliser, Peers thought he had won it for the visitors. A tidy finish into the bottom right hand corner looked like it had made it 2-1 to Airbus but the linesman’s flag denied the No.11.

As we headed into injury time, Danny Warren hit his effort on the volley and it looked like it was nestling into the bottom corner, but Smith got down fantastically to his right to deny the ex-Mold player.

The referee blew on an eventful game and both teams had to settle for a point each.
