Defeat on the road for our Women side

Airbus Women fell to a 2–0 defeat away at Connah’s Quay Nomads U19s, in a match defined by tight midfield battles, limited clear‑cut chances, and two looping finishes that ultimately separated the sides. While there was plenty of quality on display from both teams, neither goalkeeper was regularly tested, with much of the contest centred on possession and physical duels in the middle third.

The Wingmakers created the first meaningful opening just five minutes in. Excellent pressing from Kayla Young and Tiff Sands forced a turnover high up the pitch, allowing Young to drive into the area, attempting a chipped shot, but the Nomads goalkeeper stood tall and gathered the effort.

Airbus continued to threaten sporadically, with Alicia Thomas going close after running onto a well‑weighted ball over the top from Heledd Roberts, only to see her strike clip the top side of the crossbar.

Despite these moments, the half remained cagey, with both sides competing fiercely for control in midfield. Just before the interval, the home side found the breakthrough. A mishit shot inside the box took an awkward spin, looping high over Smith and dropping into the net to give Nomads a 1–0 lead at half‑time.

Nomads began the second half with greater possession, forcing Airbus to look for opportunities on the counter. Ten minutes after the restart, the home side doubled their advantage. Once again, Airbus were punished for failing to close down quickly enough, allowing a Nomads midfielder the space to shoot from distance. The effort looped over Smith for the second time, making it 2–0.

From there, the pattern of the match became clear. Nomads’ physicality and fitness allowed them to dictate longer spells of possession, while Airbus worked hard to break forward when opportunities arose. The Wingmakers defended resolutely and continued to compete, but chances remained scarce at both ends.

Airbus pushed late on, looking to find a route back into the game, but Nomads managed the closing stages well. Their organisation and athleticism ensured they held out for all three points, keeping them top of the table after five matches.

A match of few chances and tight margins ultimately went the way of the home side. Airbus showed commitment, discipline, and flashes of attacking threat, but two looping finishes—one from a mishit, one from distance—proved decisive. With plenty of positives in terms of work rate and structure, the Wingmakers will look to sharpen their reactions around the edge of the box as they prepare for their next fixture.
